Week 5 Discussion Question

At the end of the story Gram says to Lily, "It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst times, something lovely happens." What do you think Gram is talking about? How do you think the war changed Lily? Why do you think she said that even though she was going back to Rockaway to the same ocean and the same house that "things would never be the same again?" Make sure to use details from the story to support your thinking.

  1. When Gram talked about something lovely happening, I think she was referring to the friendship between Lily and Albert. Both of them were affected by the war and were struggling. During the summer, they became friends and learned from one another.
One way Lily changed was she stopped lying. She thought about her problem list (back in Chapter 7) Lies, Daydreaming, and Friends, need. In Chapter 28, Lily said she didn't lie anymore and was learning the difference between lies and daydreaming.
For Lily, Rockaway would not be the same because she wouldn't have Albert there, nor Margaret. However, what Lily didn't know was that Rockaway would change forever because Albert and Ruth were living with the Orbans.

  2. When Gram says to Lily, "It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst times, something lovely happens." I think Gram is saying when we go through a tough time it make us take a closer look at ourselves. In doing so, we might realize our behavior needs to change. Lily always looked at Gram as someone who was constantly nagging her. Whether is was telling her to eat her breakfast or practice the piano. Through this experience Lily realizes her Gram really cares for her. She sees what Albert has gone through, losing his family and it makes Lily more aware of the family she still has. When Gram tells Lily "things will never be the same again" this means they all have gone through a sad a terrible experience and has changed them all. Lily has discover she doesn't need to lie to have a friend. That a true friend will like her for who she is. She has also realized her Gram is a special person that cares very much for her. Lily through this experience has learned to see the world and the struggles that people endure. She has learned to appreciate her family and the sacrifices they have made.

  3. In the book Lily’s Crossing Gram says “ It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst times, something lovely happens.” I think what Gram was saying is even though terrible things are happening right now, those terrible things could bring something lovely because of those terrible things. In Lily’s situation the war was going on in Hungary so thats what brought Albert there and then Albert and Lily became best friends. That I think brought something lovely during the war.
During the story Lily has stuff happening to her during the war and after the war. Gram said that “things would never be the same again.” Even though she was going to Rockaway to the same ocean and the same house. I think Gram said this because things have changed over the past months since she was last there. A few examples is now Albert and Ruth live there, The war is over so now there is more stuff to buy, and now no one has to leave to go and fight at the war or go work in the factories for the war.

  4. When Gram says "It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst times, something lovely happens,” she means that even though you thought that there is nothing good going on in the world right now you can always find a good thing in your life that does not make things seem as bad. For example, Lily was not off on a good summer start because Margret was moving and that she didn’t say good bye to Poppy. She did not have any friends until she found out that Albert was there and then she became friends. That was the lovely thing that happened during the hard or scary time. I think that the war has changed Lily in a way that she understands more about what it is like to miss someone so much you are willing to do anything to get them back. She learned that she needed to have more than one friend and she learned a little about what it would be like to live in a country that has war. I feel like she learned to put more than just her body in others shoes but to take her heart with her. When Lily said that even though she was going back to Rockaway to the same ocean and the same house that things would never be the same again because, Albert made her last summer so much more exciting and she now didn’t have a friend to hang out with since Margaret was never coming back and Albert had gone away she knows that her summer can never be the same without Albert.

    1. I agree with you. The part I liked is when you said “Lily was not off on a good summer start because Margret was moving and that she didn’t say good bye to Poppy. She did not have any friends until she found out that Albert was there and then she became friends. “ The part was when you said Poppy and Margaret was the horrible part and Lily meeting Albert was the good part.

  5. I think what Gram means by saying "It was a long war, a terrible war, but sometimes, even in the worst times, something lovely happens," is that even though this war was long and though good things can still come out of the bad things. That really means that even if Poppy was gone she made friends with Albert . This war changes Lily because if the Nazis had not invaded Hungary Albert would not of come to America and taught Lily not to lie and also, since Margaret left it gave Lily a chance to find a new friend. When Lily was going back to Rock away she said "things would never be the same again.” because Albert is back and Margaret in not there and Poppy is back so she would not have the the same experiences that Lily used to because there was not the same people that are in Rock away as there was a few years ago.

  6. When Gram talked about something lovely happening, I thought it was Lily’s and Albert’s friendship. They were both struggling in the war and that may have affected them. Also they both became friends in the summer. One way Lily changed is she stopped lieing. She learned that it is bad to lie. Rockaway will not be the same because Lily’s friend Margaret will not be there. Also it won't be the same because Albert and Ruth are living with the Orbans. This will not be the same for Lily because this has never happened to her (Someone (Albert) being adopted).

    1. I don’t really get it when you said (Someone(Albert) adopted). Over all your explanation was really good. I like your RAD explanation. You did a great job.

  7. What Gram means by “ even the worst times something lovely happens” means that even now something really horrible happened something good will come out of it. The horrible things is when the war was still going something horrible had happened and when Albert and Ruth finally connected and that was the lovely thing. I think what Lily meant by that is that “ nothing is going to be the same” is that she doesn’t have Margaret anymore and Albert and Ruth are leaving the Orbans so then Lily is all alone with no friends. I think if Lily tries to make new friends people probably won’t believe her because in the past she lied and now nobody in her class or school will know that she stopped lying so it will be hard for her to make new friends.

    1. Meg, when you said that when Albert had finally contracted Ruth I totally did not know that that could be a high during the war. Great thinking Meg!
