Before Lily leaves Margaret's house in Chapter 4, Margaret gives Lily a key to her house. She explains, "This is for you, the back door key. You can sneak in, come right up to the attic, and write your next five books." Why is this key such a good gift for Lily? Knowing now what we know about Lily (that she can be a liar and a troublemaker), why could this gift get her in trouble?

The key is a good gift for Lily because it can give her a place to be alone and have time to buy herself because her Gram is alway wanting her to do things that she does not want to do. This key can get Lily into trouble by when she is going up into the attic Lily’s mom could find out and get both of them in trouble. Also Lily may get into Margaret's families’ business and find out things that she did not know before and wasn’t supposed to know about, that could ruin Margaret’s and Lily’s friendship.

I agree that Lily can get into Margaret’s family business because they could have forgot something that is really important to them and Lily might find it and start reading it and the paper or start looking through.

DeleteNicki, I think you are right. Lily was happy to think she would have her own little secret hideaway to go to. There she can read and write without her grandmother telling her to do things. Trouble might come her way if Lily snoops around the house and uncovers things about Margaret's family. That could ruin their friendship. Hopefully Lily would care about the trust Margaret had in her and respect their privacy.

ReplyDeleteAfter finding out that Margaret will be away this summer Lily has suddenly lost her summer friend. The thought of finding a new friend made her shudder. Then, Margaret gives Lilly a key to her house and she thinks it is the best gift ever. After all she will have the entire house to herself. She will be able to spend time in front of the attic window spying on the people below. She won't have to hear Gram tell her what do do. She also won't be reminded of the war her Father is now leaving for. This key however could also get her into trouble, if someone catches her going into the house.
ReplyDeleteI really agree with your mini paragraph The gift that Margaret gave to Lily will give a chance to Lily to spy on her neighbors because that is something that lily likes to do and that is part of her personality. I also agree that if Lily doesn't want to listen to Gram she can go to to the attic and spy on her neighbors and she will feel better.

DeleteThe key was such a great present because Lily can go up to her house and peacefully write books there in the attic. Lily can also go to Margaret's house and be there peaceful and alone know one to bother her. Grams is always telling Lily what to do and when to do it though Lily doesn’t want to do it. I think that this gift could get her into trouble because it is like breaking in. Also, She might forget to lock the door and someone like Albert could break in. Maybe, Lily could “Accidentally” find something that she wasn’t supposed to find like important secret family stuff that only the family knows. Who knows maybe the key was such a bad idea, but maybe it could mess up Lily’s friendship with Margaret and her summer.
ReplyDeleteDo you think Lily would forget to lock the door? If someone found out, that could be trouble for her. They might catch her inside and take her home to Gram's or call the police. That could certainly cause trouble for Margaret and Lily. It might be the end to their friendship.
DeleteWe might look at the "key" as secrets that are yet to be told, and foreshadowing of who is entrusted with those secrets later on in the summer.
DeleteI think Lily is gifted with an incredibly vivid imagination, and a desire to sneak things past her Grandma. The free pass to her friends empty house will give her the opportunity to expand her imaginative writing, IF that's what she chooses to use it for.

DeleteThe key from Margaret is a prized gift for Lily because it gives her the freedom her life with Grams in Rockaway wouldn't provide. She feels excited about the possibilties in Margaret's empty house to write and read without hinderance. Lily knows that her lies can get her into trouble one day. I think having the key to Margaret's house can cause people to misinterpret her intentions. Others may think she stole the key and was up to no good.
