Week 2 Discussion Question

Lily and Albert begin to get to know each other. Lily claims to not want any more friends, or to be friends with Albert, but after they find the kitten Albert offers to feed and take care of the kitten himself. "She felt so disappointed, she could hardly finish. He didn't want to be friends. He could have said We can feed her together, or even We can take turns." Why is Lily so upset by this? What does this tell us about Lily? Make sure to use details from the story to support your answer.

  1. I think Lily was upset by Albert's offer to take care of the kitten alone because she was disappointed. She wanted Albert to befriend her and ask her for help taking care of the rescued kitten. Her reaction really shows how insecure she is and how she misinterprets others intentions. She presumes Albert offers to care for the kitten alone because he doesn't want to be friends. It shows how much Lily needs a friend, but acts like she doesn't care or is tougher than she really is.

    1. I really love you thinking of why Lily was disappointed when Albert offered to take care of the cat because You really dug in to how Lily felt and why.

    2. I really love that you described your explanation and how you told about Lily’s feelings and how you dug into Lily’s feeling and why you thought she was mad about Albert taking care of the kitten alone.

  2. I think Lily is disappointed by Albert wanting to take care of the cat because she wanted them to take care of the cat together. But she says she doesn't need any more friends but does she need them? Because shes really acting like she doesn't, but she really does. Also, if she gave up the key Margaret would probably be mad because Margaret gave her the key and if Albert lost it bad things could happen. Also, she would not be able to go up to the attic and write her books and have alone time without anyone bothering her.

    1. Nicki, good thoughts. Who really doesn't need a friend? Also, it woud be bad news if something did happen to the key and was lost.
I think Lily wants to know she is needed and is valuable too. What do you think?

    3. Nicki, good thoughts. Who wouldn’t need another friend then just having one? I think that Lily didn’t give the key directly to Albert because if Albert lost the key lily won’t have a great memory about Margaret so that is why she put the key under the rock. Do you agree too?

  3. I think Lily is so upset because she cares about the kitten and she wants to take care of it too because if she didn’t like the cat Lily won’t care that Albert is taking care of the cat alone. What it shows to us about Lily is that she wants to have more friends but she doesn’t want to show it. The reason why she needs more friends than just Margaret is because if she didn’t have any other friend and Margaret moves away Lily won’t have a friend to hang out with when her other friend is gone. I think Lily is scared to ask Albert if he wanted to be friends with him is because she was spying on him and Albert and he found out and Albert may not trush Lily to be friends with him. Another thing, is that Albert could find out again that Lily was listening to what he was saying and it could be something private and he didn’t want anyone to hear.

    1. Meghan, I agree I think Lily is afraid to ask Albert to be friends. She doesn't want others to think she is lonely. She makes up lies to convince herself and those around her that her life is more interesting than it really is and to impress them. I think her lies will get her in serious trouble someday. If you really cared about others, I don't think you need to make things up to make them think you are more exciting. Being honest with yourself and others is more important.
      What do you think?

  4. I think that Lily was disappointed that Albert wanted to take care of the cat alone is because she saved the cat and thought that Albert was her friend and wanted to be her friend and at least say “Oh, do you want to help take care of him?” or “ Do you want to take turns taking care of him?” This tells us that Lily is insecure and miss thinks others interpretations she jumps to conclusions fast without thinking about it. It also shows that she is in need of friends because Margret is gone and that she is not as tough as she acts.

  5. Lily was so excited to go away this summer to the beach. She was expecting to have many adventures with her friend and her father who she loves dearly. But ever since she arrived she has had one disappointment after another. Then Albert arrives and suddenly he's everywhere she is. Lily discovers he likes to do a lot of the same things she does. Then they connect with the kitten but Albert doesn't seek out for friendship and this makes Lily very sad. I think Lilly doesn't want another disappointment in her life and therefore pretends she doesn't want to be friends with Albert .

  6. Lily was so disappointed when Albert didn’t ask her for help with the kitten, after all she is the one that saved the kitten. I think this may have upset Lily because Lily is the type of person that when she does something good she wants credit for what she has done. Albert didn’t even say thank you or that was very brave of you for jumping into the water and saving the kitten. He then took the kitten and said its my kitten. Lily got mad and decided she really didn’t like Albert as a friend.

  8. Lily is deeply disappointed when Albert does not ask her to help care for the kitten both because she wants to help care for the animal and because doing it together would provide an opportunity to develop a friendship with Albert. I think she denies wanting more friendships because for a girl so young, she has experienced a tremendous amount of loss. First the loss of her mother and now, at least temporarily, her father and Margaret to the war. We see Lily push people away because she is afraid to lose more loved ones. But like all of us, Lily needs to connect with others and wants to have Albert as a friend. Lily can be stubborn but also resilient. She shows that resilience in her continued efforts to create a friendship with Albert including when she talks him into sneaking into the movies. Do you think Lily's efforts will be rewarded and they will become friends?

  10. I think Lily was upset by Albert's offer to take care of the kitten alone because Lily actually wants to be friends with Albert. As well she saved the kitten so Lily should be taking care of the kitten, not Albert. If Lily found the kitten then why is Albert not asking her if they would share the job or something like that. Also Lily saved the kitten so she should be the one deciding what to do. Lily likes to be in control so that may also be why she is upset.
