Week 4 Discussion Question

After Lily saves Albert in the storm they are sitting with Gram discussing the war. Gram says, "Don't you know that this is what it's all about? Nagymamma sending you and Ruth away from her so you'd be safe? And your parents publishing a newspaper, helping to win the war, so you'd have a good life? And Poppy, who could have stayed right here...he went for you Lily, and I had to let him go." What does Gram mean by "he went for you Lily?" Gram then says "But worth it. Worth the price to keep you safe." Do you think all of the sacrifices their families have made are worth it? Why or why not? Use examples from the book to support your thinking.

Make sure to answer the question with a RAD response and use details from the text to support your answer. Please check your grammar, spelling, capitalization, and conventions before submitting your response.

  1. When Gram said Lily's father went for her, she was saying it was to keep her safe. What does it mean to Lily knowing that her father went to Europe to do his part for the war? Gram wanted Lily to understand that sometimes the sacrifices made were for the greater good. He didn't really want to leave his daughter and his mother, but knew that he needed to do something to keep them safe. Although the war was on the other side of a vast ocean, the allies couldn't stop Hitler alone. It would require the sacrifices of brave men, women and their families. Sacrifice costs something and at the time, it was unpleasant, but served a greater purpose and provided the necessary resources to eventually win the war.

    1. Your response is really clear and I really understand it. I agree when you said “He didn’t want to leave his daughter or mother but he knew he needed to do something to keep them safe.” The reason why I just love that part is because It shows Poppy really wants to get the war over with so he will fight in it and Gram, Lily and Poppy can live a life in peace.

  2. When Gram says that Poppy “went for her,” she means by that is that Poppy was going to help in the war so it would be over sooner and that Lily did not have to deal with the war any more. He wanted to keep Lily safe from the war in case it move overseas to come to America. I think that the sacrifices that the families have made are worth it because the steps they took is just one more step to keeping them (Lily, Gram and the people in other countries like Ruth) safe. I think this because Poppy decided to help make things for the war so that the soldiers can use the things that they make to save/help the people in the places that the Germans have taken over and he wanted to help those in need.

    1. Sarah I like this response because you put so much good detail and you made it described . I agree with you on the part when you said that Poppy went for Lily so the war doesn’t go over the seas and to America. I think he would do this is because he doesn’t want to lose more people from his family and then be a lonely guy and come back to Rockaway and see that it is destorred.

    2. Sarah, good analysis. I think her father knew that he could help by using his skills to help in the recovery efforts. The effects of war can leave a large path of destruction and need others to help rebuild. Also, I agree the sacrifices made were ways families tried to keep others safe.

    3. Sarah, you had a good and thoughtful response. Lily's father went over to help with the war efforts to rebuild after the Nazis retreated. He didn't make that decision lightly and it was his way of keeping them safe. Also, I think your thought about was the sacrifices of many families worth it is mature and astute.

  3. What Gram meant by “ he went for you Lily.” is that Poppy will always have Lily in his heart and he went in the war to keep Lily safe and also other people safe so they don’t have to deal with a broken down town and Nazis roaming their town. I think the sacrifices that the families made a wise because Poppy went to fight in the war and that is a good thing because he wants there to be now more fighting and Poppy can see his daughter again. I think Albert made a wise chores because he can now live a life with peace and he also doesn’t have to work so much he can relax and have fun. Albert’s parents made a wise decision by writing the newspaper article was a good thing sh Albert and Ruth knew that Hitler and the Nazis are really dangerous people and you should never be near them because they could hurt you really badly.

    1. Meg I really like your post you really explained it well by quoting text it really makes it more clear. Why did you put “In his heart?” instead of love her or something, I really like that!! I can tell that you put in a lot of effort it really told me what you think!

    2. Meg I agree that Poppy will alway have Lily and Gram in his heart and that he did go to the war to keep Lily and Gram Safe He didn’t want them to be affected by the war too much so he went to protect them.

    3. Meg, great thoughts and a heartfelt explanation. You are right that Poppy will have them in his heart, even when he is far away. The sacrifices made by parents aren't always easy choices, but it is based on what they determine is best. As a parent, I want to keep my children safe from harm and those who may cause harm. I know that the choices they made had to be extremely heartbreaking and painful. Sacrifice is costly, but in the end worth it.

  4. I think what Gram means by saying “ He went for you” meant that he went to fight in the war for Lily because, Lily is his daughter and he wants Lily to be happy. So for what gram really means is that since Poppy loves her he's going to fight in the war. The sacrifices that both Poppy and Albert’s parents made is a good choice because they did that to keep their kids safe even if the could die. The reason why this is a good choice is because Albert’s stood up to what they believe and if Poppy did not go to make supplies the war could of ended up here in America.

    1. Nicki, I don't think Poppy thought going to war would make Lily happy. In fact, he knew it would make her sad and angry. I agree that Poppy and Albert's parents made the sacrifices out of love for them and in an effort to keep them safe.

  5. In the book Lily’s Crossing I think Gram said “ He went for you Lily” because instead of staying with Lily and not doing anything about the war Lily, I think Poppy went to got fight in the war to make there be more people in the war so they might win the war. In the book it said that Lily just wanted everything to be the same and not have the war be on for everything.
I think the all the sacrifices both families made were worth it. I think the sacrifices Lily’s family made was worth it because even with one more person can make a difference and Poppy’s side may even win the war. Then everything can go back to normal and Poppy can be with Lily. I think Alberts parents choice was not really worth it because they ended up dieing and plus there are much more followers to Hitler then two people making a newspaper about how horrible the Nazies were. In the book it says that the newspaper didn’t make a difference so pretty much they just killed killed each other I don’t think that is worth it at all. Over all soon the war will be over and MAYBE Albert, Lily and Margaret will be friends and everything will be fine.

    1. Rylee, Poppy did go to war because he wanted to keep Lily safe. Can one person make a difference? I think one person can make a difference whether it have a greater reach or just touch one life. Also, we don't know the impact Albert's parents lives had, the author doesn't share the details. But we do know that their sacrifice did make a difference in the life of Albert and his sister. We don't know what would have happened if they stayed in Hungary.
Can life go back to normal after such a horrific war? Or after a huge tragedy? I think people will adjust to a new normal, but things will never be the same.

  6. Poppy went to go help in the war with Lily because Poppy did not want Lily to die. If she did die then it would be so bad and she is the main character in the story. No I do not think it was worth it because they should make better decisions even if they have none in their mind. Like if Lily was trying to say something then she really needs to put effort in what she is trying to say.

    1. I agree Amari no one wants someone to die especially if they’re family. If she did die you’re right it would be horrible and just because she is the main character the book would be horrible Albert wouldn’t have a friend to hang out with.

    2. I like how you can see the challenges that Lily faces dealing with circumstances that are hard for adults, much less kids, to understand. In these chapters of the book Lily we get to see Lily experience a transformation. When she finally sees the war through the eyes of others-- Albert, her father, her Gram-- she matures significantly. As you point out, she sees that she needs to think more carefully about what she says and how it might impact others.

    3. Amari, I understand what you are trying to say. Decisions are difficult and for Poppy required sacrifice. He sacrificed being with Lily, in order to go to war to help fight the Nazis.
Lily's immaturity is what keeps her from speaking the truth and is what keeps her lying. I hope she learns that truth is always better, even if it is hard to do.

  7. When Gram, Albert and Lily are all talking about the war and the sacrifices so many people from all over the world have made. Gram says "he went for you Lily, and I had to let him go. My son." In Gram's heart she didn't want him to go. Gram, being older and not having as many years of life ahead of her would rather have her son safe and home by her side. But she knows Poppy has chosen to go for Lily who is young and has many years ahead. He wants to do his part to make her country free and safe. The war was spreading fast and Hitler was getting stronger. He had to be stopped. All the these sacrifices from so many people for their families and country was worth it. Hitler was defeated and eventually life returned to normal.
